We are so happy to have many of our SAC alumni join us again this year and excited to meet our new Camper Kids.

HAPPY EASTER SAC FRIENDS!

Summer Arts Camp registration officially began on April 1st and we already have several SAC alumni signed up for our camp this summer!  We looking forward to seeing our 2013 & 2014 SAC friends and reuniting with them this year, and meeting some new artists too.

We will be bringing back some old favorites with our projects and adding some twists, but of course will be introducing some new and exciting art projects and creations.

MEMORIES FROM SUMMER ARTS CAMP 2014

This delightful collection of photographs in video format of the Summer Arts Camps 2014 Camper Kids is a joy to watch.  It's less than five minutes long and worth every minute.  I hope you will take a moment to enjoy and consider joining us again this year.

STICKY FINGERS

Who knew...

that we could make fabric machè bowls!

This was a first-time project at Summer Arts Camp and...it was an experiment.  The SAC Team did a trial or two of this project before camp began {as we do with every one}, but we were not quite sure how it would actually turn out with the Camper Kids getting their own hands into the gluey gooey mess.  

Last year we had fun creating papier machè bowls with paper and the Camper Kids loved it.  This year we wanted to try something new using the same concept, but with a different medium.

With a generous donation of designer fabric samples, tailored dress shirts, and scraps from my personal sewing collection, the little artists had some design decisions to make.

Basic supplies of glue, paint brushes, scissors, plastic bowls used for molds, recycled glass jars, and strips of torn textiles...

evolved into a collection of beautifully crafted handmade decorative fabric bowls, vases, and candle holders created by the Camper Kids' sticky fingers.

Vibrant colors, 

cheetah prints, polka dots, traditional tattersall, and plaids were some of the patterns chosen for these creations.

The bowls and jars were wonderful!  And while our sample {the yellow dotty bowl} was made using cut fabric strips rather than the torn strips the Camper Kids made, and the edge of the bowl was a clean cut edge instead of a ragged one, I rather like the organic randomness of the torn fabric and irregular edges of the bowls and jars the Camper Kids created.  Don't you?

It was a challenging, time consuming, thoughtful project, and the Camper Kids did a fabulous job!  

Now you all know what you can do with your old shirts and stuff ~ tear them up, give your child some glue, a paint brush, and a jar, and let them create!

MOTHER NATURE INSPIRED

We celebrated the beauty of Mother Nature during both weeks of Summer Arts Camp this year creating upcycled woodland gardens, tiny terrariums, flower fairies, and painted bird houses.

With some supplies from our sponsors, we created mixed media flower gardens by hand painting wooden boards, collected from Ahn's Karate {these were pine boards kicked in half during testings} and some crazy pieces of the same wood cut by Mr. Reg with the jigsaw. 

 Flowers made with bottle caps and Popsicle sticks were planted, bugs hatched from corks, and rainbows of butterflies flew out of a box of paint chips given to us by Acme Paint & Decorating.

While the paint was drying, the Camper Kids went on a hike in our woods and collected twigs, leaves, blueberries, roses and daisies, pods, and herbs from our garden.  Suddenly a family of garden characters came alive in our SAC tent!

With the bare minimum of tools and lots of imagination the Camper Kids began to daydream and create their very own and very own personal garden creatures ~ each with their very own story.

Winged Flower Fairies and sturdy Green Guys.

A pine cone bird.

Taking a little time to smell the flowers.

A summer romance.

Boy sees Girl.

Boy chases Girl.

Boy gives Girl flowers.

Girl dreams of flowers.

Then came the Garden Fairy houses...or so some said!  Petite bird houses were painted and bejeweled in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors, each one unique and showing off the personality of it's owner.

It's easy to say that the Camper Kids had fun in and out of the garden on our Garden Arts Day!

A MEXICAN FOLK ART FIESTA!

With a little inspiration from the SAC Team and some brightly colored supplies,

during week one of Summer Arts Camp 2014 the Camper Kids made their very own Mexican Folk art and tin engravings.

Their tools were simple ~ silver tin, ballpoint pens, Sharpies, wire, beads...and their creative minds.

Mobiles of color came alive at our campsite.

The tin panels strung together with colored wire sparkled from the sunlight and fluttered in the breeze.

Iconic Mexican images and patterns were drawn with impeccable detail.

Some mobiles were monogrammed, some showed love...

...others smiled sweetly.

In honor of the American holidays this summer, one of our themed art days at Summer Arts Camp 2014 will be All American Arts Day.  This hand painted banner is one of the projects the Camper Kids will be creating in celebration of our American patriotism.

We are happy that we will be meeting so many new Camper Kids this June and especially pleased that many of our SAC 2013 alumni will be returning.
