SWEETER THAN SUGAR

Each year during Summer Arts Camp, we celebrate the arts of our world.

This year for International Arts Day, we created a project that I have been wanting to do with the Camper Kids for a long time...

Mexican sugar skull masks!

With a rainbow collection of Sharpies, pretty papers, flowers, feathers, beads and baubles, and a pile of mixed media...

...sweet as sugar skull masks were taking over!

Each mask reflected the personality of each Camper Kid in a crazy sort of way...

Each, unique, creative, and thoughtful.

All wonderful!

With some time to spare, we then made our very own Mexican tin engravings.

When the panels were complete we strung them together with colored wire and beads so we could hang them up.

THE FACES OF SUMMER ARTS CAMP

We had some adorable faces with us during our 2016 Summer Arts Camp, and even though camp is done, their smiles will stay with us for quite some time.

As is our tradition on the first day of camp each year, we introduce ourselves and show off our talent with our very own illustrated and painted...

...selfies!

Using black Sharpies and the strategic placement of watercolor on acid free mat board, the two dimensional faces of our Camper Kids came to life.

It is always a fun beginning to our camp week and a barometer of what to expect from these little artists in residence.

We could tell from these works of art that we were in for an adventurous and artistic two weeks.

The saturation of color was beyond bold.

The expressions drawn on these faces so true to the personalities of the Camper Kids.

Their work was such an inspiration to me, that I even had a few moments to sit down with them to paint a couple of portraits myself.

Here is a peek at some of their work in progress...

...and a few who posed with their painted portraits.

We will be posting these photographs on our Instagram and Facebook pages, so stay in the know and  please follow!

OUR SOUTHERN TIDE

We are going scuba diving at Summer Arts Camp this year!

What will we find deep in the ocean?

Seaweed, seashells, and squid!

What will we create?

Upcycled plastic bottle papier maché octopuses!

Then we will dress these long legged mollusks up in sand sparkles and clam shells, among other adornments and treasures we find in sunken ships...

...so these playful squid will be ready to swim in our southern tide.

SWEET AS SUGAR

A crazy candy crush!

With a mix of materials ~ flowers and feathers, beads and baubles...

...pretty paper and a rainbow of Sharpie markers, we created these festive sugar skull masks.

These whimsical masks are just one of the projects we will be doing on our INTERNATIONAL ARTS DAY, celebrating Mexico.

Don't be scared...they are as sweet as sugar!

LIFE IS A BEACH ~ EVEN IN MACON!

While many of our Summer Arts Camp families and friends are enjoying this Memorial Day weekend at a beach ~ playing in the sand, catching the waves, flying kites ~ we here at SAC headquarters are gearing up for camp to begin very soon, so our beach time will not happen until later in the summer.

However, we wanted to share some fun that you may have while you are by the shore this weekend.

OCEAN ARTS DAY is one of our themed art days during camp this summer and one project we will be creating is a collection of charming BEACH CREATURES...

Mermaids and surfers...

Princess sea angels...

Sea sisters...

...a little mouse,

...and some sea turtles, of course.

So get your head out of the sand, pick up a pail, and collect some sea shells!  Arrange them on a flat surface and take a photo.  Share with us your work on our Facebook page.  We would love to see what you are doing this first official weekend of summer.

Have fun and stay safe.
See you in June!
